Mum And Me

May 19th 2010

A new camogie coaching programme ‘Mum and Me!’ was launched by Camogie Association President Joan O’Flynn and Director of LIT Maria Hinfelaar on Monday 17th of May in Limerick Institute of Technology.

The programme was designed by LIT GAA Development Officer Eddie O’Sullivan and piloted in his home club Blackrock. The final evening of the 6 week pilot was held in LIT as the players aged 8-10 took part in a series of fun games which tested the skills learned in the previous weeks. The players and parents were presented with certificates by Joan 0’Flynn and Maria Hinfelaar in the LIT Boardroom

The aim of the programme is to increase the involvement of parents helping out with underage coaching and to provide each participant with the proper coaching information and technique to coach the basic skills required to play the game. Mothers are taught the technique and key coaching points of 7 basic skills of camogie and how to practice these with their daughter.

Each parent will be encouraged to coach each skill to the child at home between each session; this will ensure consistent feedback to the child and reinforce the idea of practice at home. At the end of each session the tutor will give each Mother and Daughter drills to work on between sessions. To ensure that the coaching technique is consistent a fridge magnet with the key coaching points on it will be handed to each Mother to refer to.

Munster Development Officer Deirdre Murphy paid tribute to the programme creator Eddie O’Sullivan; ‘This came about from a conversation in the office one day in LIT and it’s something Eddie has put huge amounts of time and effort into. The result is a fantastic programme that we will roll out on a national basis and we hope that it will be effective in reinforcing the idea of practicing the skills of camogie with parents at home as a fun and rewarding activity for both Mother and Daughter.’

Limerick Camogie Under 12 Inititive: The Under 12 League 2010

This year we are trying something different with our u 12 leauge.

TRIAL FOR 2010 THAT COMPETATIVE SECTION BE 13 PLAYERS ASIDE

Phase One is non competitive each team will play one another in their group. The game can be 12 aside or up to 15 aside and 20 mins aside more if both teams agree. A pre-game training / coaching session mixing both teams with a few coaches from both sides would be good for the girls and their development. During the game all subs must be played for at least 10 mins, taking off the better players at times to even out the game. We ask all coaches and managers to give this a try and encourage the development of our players. It is important that both managers agree to this as participation for the girls at this stage of the competition is more important than winning.

Phase Two is a competitive league, again with each team playing each other. The game is 20mins aside and 12 players only per side. The winners of each group will play in the A semi-final and so on.

Feedback to date: U12 Development 2009

24 teams lined out last weekend for the inaugural U12 development leagues , 21 limerick teams and 3 invited clubs from our neighbours in Kerry. By all accounts it was a successful start to this initiative , a lot of parents were happy that their children got to play some or all of the game. For some girls it would have been their first time in action for their club and with the pressure off them to produce a result it seemed to add to their enjoyment of Camogie. Well done to all the girls , mentors and parents who took part or helped out over the weekend.

Out of the 12 fixtures the Kilmallock V Blackrock game saw 30 girls turn out , while Kilmallock were dominant at the start the spirit of the development league was evident when Mike Murphy changed around his team during the first half which evened up things , with the introduction of all the subs at half time the game was more balanced and both teams left the field happy with their lot. After the game both sets of coaches held a joint skills session which was of benefit to all the girls. In the Templeglantine V Abbeyleix(kerry) game Olive had more than 25 girls togged out while the visitors had up on 15 girls ,again the coaches gave all the girls a run out and a joint skills session was held for all the girls together. Over in Granagh the game between Ballyagran and Granagh-ballingarry saw 35 girls take to the field , over an hour of camogie was played between the sides with all girls getting a good run out on the day.

Ballybrown played Patrickswell in a spirited match on sat evening. Ballybrown had 18 players while Patrickswell had 17. Each girl got a run-out during the match. It was a tight contest with each team giving it their all. Niamh Curtin and Kate Mulqueen showed great skill for the Ballybrown team while Lisa Naughton and Chloe Murray did the same for Patrickswell. With great support for both teams, every girl palyed their heart out in a very enjoyable match.

We are getting on well in the u12 development league. matches. We played our third round this evening. Our 1st was against Murroe/Boher and they all enjoyed it. All girls got a good run. Our 2nd and 3rd matches were against Treaty Gaels which we all played well in. In the 1st match we decided to play all 15 girls together but this seemed to cause confusion as there was to many on, but this evening we played 12 aside and brought on the two subs we both had. this worked better. It is giving all girls the chance to get used to playing matches rather then in competition.
